Dear John,
Increasingly, we are having conversations with donors who are rethinking how their accumulated assets can create meaningful impact, both during their lifetime and as part of their legacy.
Recently, we met a couple in their seventies who had built much of their net worth through long-held appreciated stock. Like many families, their children are financially independent, and their planning conversations have shifted from inheritance to stewardship.
After discussions with their advisor, they chose to make a charitable gift of appreciated stock to ACH Child and Family Services.
While the philanthropic motivation led their decision, the structure of the gift provided notable planning advantages:
- A charitable deduction based on full fair market value
- Avoidance of capital gains tax on highly appreciated assets
- The ability to make a larger, more impactful gift than selling and donating proceeds or giving cash
For this family, the result was a meaningful alignment between their values and their financial plan, creating immediate impact for children and families in our care.
Why This Matters for Your Clients
We are seeing increased donor interest in:
- Non-cash giving strategies, particularly appreciated securities
- Lifetime giving that complements estate plans
- Opportunities to align charitable intent with tax-efficient planning
Our role is to ensure these conversations remain donor-centered while working collaboratively with advisors to implement strategies that serve the client’s broader financial and legacy goals.
A Partnership Approach
We recognize that you are your client’s most trusted advisor. Our goal is simply to:
- Share how these conversations are emerging among donors
- Provide planning-aligned giving opportunities when appropriate
- Partner with you to ensure any charitable strategies are executed in a way that reflects your client’s intent and best interests
If you have clients who may benefit from exploring charitable gifts of appreciated assets, or if you would like to better understand how these strategies are being discussed in donor conversations, I would welcome the opportunity to connect.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Dixie
